Liege has started preparations for the European Football Championship in the year 2000, which will take place in Belgium and The Netherlands. With this Summer's World Cup Championship in France still in our minds, football fans are now looking forward to the European competition. Some of the matches will take place in the Standard of Liege football stadium and in the run up to Euro 2000, a number of events will take place in Liege, including a preliminary international football tournament in 1999.

In addition to football, every year several sporting events take place in the Province of Liege. The 'Liege-Bastogne-Liege' and the 'Flèche Wallonne' cycling events, 'International Show Jumping of Liege', and the 'Formula One Grand Prix of Belgium' in Spa-Francorchamps. The latest Grand Prix event took place at the end of August and once again attracted audiences in their tens of thousands from all over Europe.
